Dollar General is planning a store in Middleburg along Country Road 218.

Clay County is reviewing the application for the site, west of Blanding Boulevard across from Extra Space Storage.  Tidewater Engineering is listed as the civil engineer. YL21 LLC of Boothway Harbor, Maine, is the property owner.

YL21 LLC owns two properties at the site totaling 2.06 acres at 4411 and 4417 Country Road 218.

The next step is a meeting with the county’s development review committee, which has not been scheduled. The DRC is an advisory committee to the county. Pending approvals, the county’s building department will have the final say.

Dollar General wants to bring a store to this site at 4411 Country Road 218.

Dollar General markets itself as America’s general store offering everyday essentials at affordable prices. Merchandise includes food, snacks, health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, housewares, seasonal items, paper products and more from name brands and its private brands.

There are five Dollar General stores in the county. According to the 2020 census, Middleburg’s population was 12,881, down from 13,008 in 2010.

Data website ScrapeHero.com reports Dollar General operates 20,480 stores in 48 states and territories as of July 18. According to DollarGeneral.com, the first Dollar General opened June 1, 1955, in Springfield, Kentucky, with no item costing more than $1.

The chain does not franchise and is publicly traded. Its stores are operated by Dolgencorp LLC, a subsidiary of Dollar General Corp., which is based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Dolgencorp also produces Dollar General-branded products.

In a March 13 investor relations report, Dollar General Corp. said it began reviewing its store portfolio in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 to evaluate closures and rebranding. The review was based on individual store performance, expected future performance and operating conditions.

As a result, the company said it plans to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf stores, while converting six pOpshelf locations to Dollar General stores in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending Jan. 30, 2026.
