The Walmart Supercenter in Middleburg is priming to become the retailer’s first store in Clay County to offer electric vehicle chargers.
On Sept. 5, the St. Johns River Water Management District began reviewing an environmental resource permit application for the store at 1580 Branan Field Road to proceed with the project. Clay County began a review July 29, and it remains pending.
The water management district approval is a first step in the project. The county would ultimately issue a building permit after it reviews and approves building and civil plans.
The store is east of First Coast Expressway and west of Blanding Boulevard.
A budget amount is not listed, but projects to convert three Jacksonville Supercenters and two Neighborhood Markets were estimated to cost about $1.3 million each late last year.
In April, the Walmart Neighborhood Market in St. Johns County’s Fruit Cove area began its county review process to add chargers. That store is at 445 Florida 13.
Bowman Consulting Group Ltd. of Alpharetta, Georgia, is the civil engineer for all of the projects.
Walmart announced in April 2023 that it plans to build its own EV fast-charging network at thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club stores nationwide by 2030.
Those would be in addition to the almost 1,300 EV fast-charging stations Walmart said it had available at more than 280 facilities at that time.
The ChargeDevs.com EV engineering news site reported April 30, 2025, that Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart had opened three locations — two in Texas and one in Arkansas — on a pilot basis.
The site advises customers to download the Walmart app, scan the QR code on the charging station, plug in the connector and “you’re free to explore the store. We’ll notify you when charging is complete.”
