The Borowy Family Children’s Critical Care Tower at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville opens April 5.

The seven-story, $224 million children’s health care facility broke ground in 2019 on the Downtown Southbank.

Five of the seven floors are dedicated to children’s intensive care. The Neonatal Intensive Care Center is housed on three of those floors. Specialty units include burn and wound, cardiovascular intensive care, neuro intensive care, and pediatric intensive care.

“This is the culmination of years of hard work that started long before we ever put shovel to dirt on the construction site,” said Michael A. Mayo, president and CEO of Baptist Health, in a news release.

The first patients were transferred from Wolfson Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Units on Feb. 22.

The rooms accommodate patients and their families. Each room has a bathroom, can sleep two adults and has natural lighting, which the release said is helpful for postpartum mothers, infants and children.

“Every aspect of this building was designed with our patients and their families in mind,” Mayo said.

The hospital will employ some of the newest health care technology. It will have a Philips Predictive Analytics System, which uses artificial intelligence to help doctors predict trends that could lead to an adverse event.

The Embrace Neonatal MRI is built for child-size patients and keeps them warm during the test process. Parents can be nearby during the procedure.

The release said it is one of only four such machines in the world and the first in Florida.

The first two stories will serve as entrances and lobbies. A skyway bridge connects the P2 parking garage to the second-floor lobby to reduce pedestrian traffic on Palm Avenue.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital is at 800 Prudential Drive.
