For the moment, it’s just an acre of land filled with dense foliage that motorists traveling along Heckscher Drive probably don’t notice on the way to and from Amelia Island. By the end of 2008, David Heekin and Kelly Lawhan hope that isn’t the case.
The two, managing members for Ocean Watch at Batton Island condominiums, believe that the area is an untapped and undiscovered area in Northeast Florida.
“We really feel the area is undiscovered and has a lot to offer,” said Heekin. “It’s about 10 miles to both Amelia Island and I-295, meaning it’s not too far from anything.”
With the mouth of the St. Johns River within viewing distance, the planned private marina has garnered interest from sport fishermen.
Ocean Watch is a planned boutique-style 12-unit condominium complex. A riverfront patio and resort-style pool, as well as the marina, are some of the features offered.
Thus far, Heekin and Lawhan said pre-sales have been encouraging.
“We’ve had some early success, above average,” said Lawhan, “which is encouraging, especially in today’s market.”
The area, Heekin said, is one that should appeal to many.
“This stretch of Heckscher Drive from Batton Island up to Amelia is some of the most beautiful in Northeast Florida,” he said. “Add in the ability to be in open water in only a few minutes and you have outstanding value in an area of town that is experiencing tremendous growth.”
