Daily Record readers prefer professional football over baseball and basketball, and they like college football even more.

During the third quarter, readers responding to the Daily Record’s Weekly Poll weighed in on sports, finances, politics and more.

Asked to choose their top two among professional football, baseball and basketball, the NFL took 48 percent of the vote, MLB caught 35 percent and the NBA grabbed 17 percent.

Asked in a separate question whether they preferred college or professional football, 59 percent of readers chose college ball to 41 percent for professional football.

Those were two of the 13 Weekly Poll questions during the third quarter, July-September. Results are not scientific, but they do reflect public opinion.

Several questions concerned finances, and there certainly was some concern about finances.

Just over half, 52 percent, of respondents said their household income was more than their expenses, meaning that almost half, at 48 percent, had expenses that exceeded their income.

Almost two thirds of respondents, at 65 percent, had taken a decrease in compensation during the past year, as of early September.

Speaking of work, there was a wide split among readers when asked if they believed that President Obama’s American Jobs Act proposal to reduce payroll taxes for employers and employees will create more jobs.

More than three-quarters, 76 percent, of readers said it would not.

In another financial question, a solid majority, at 86 percent, said they had not ever been in the process of a foreclosure.

Almost three-quarters, at 71 percent, have lived in their current residence for five years or more.

Those residences generally seem to be havens. While 78 percent of respondents said they feel safe in their neighborhoods, 22 percent don’t.

When it comes to making purchases, the majority of respondents, at 60 percent, said in early July that they used debit cards most often when making everyday purchases.

Another 26 percent use credit cards for everyday purchases, while 13 percent used cash most often.

And 1 percent used checks.

When it comes to using toll roads, readers were almost split — 51 percent to 49 percent — when asked if they would use a toll road if it was more convenient. The majority tipped to those who said they would.

Meanwhile, 79 percent of respondents said no when asked if, convicted or not, they had ever been arrested. The remaining 21 percent said they had.

In another question, readers were asked whether they were born before or on Dec. 31, 1960, or after, which measures whether they were older or younger than 50.

More than half, at 53 percent, of the respondents were younger than 50, while 47 percent were older.

The use of social media, however, drew a much wider gap of responses. Just 17 percent of readers said they use Twitter, while 83 percent do not.

This week’s question is, “How many Apple products have you owned? None, 1-3 or more than three.”
