Additionally, The JBA is hosting its first Mental Health symposium titled “Representing a Client With Mental Illness” from 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m. June 26 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront in Downtown Jacksonville, immediately following the June member luncheon.

This ground-breaking program is designed to educate all attorneys, not just those limited to a specific practice area, on how to properly address mental health issues that frequently arise during representation of clients.

Some of the issues that the symposium will cover include how to identify mental illness; how to understand the physiology of mental illness; identifying the available resources to assist individuals with mental illness; and identifying the ethical obligations an attorney owes to his or her client and the court.

The “Representing a Client with Mental Illness” Mental Health Symposium includes a diverse and highly skilled group of presenters and panelists from the medical and legal fields, as well as mental health service providers. Presentations of note include:

* Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford, “Impact of Mental Illness on Our Community.”

* Daniel Wilson, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, “Overview of Mental Illness and Addiction: A Primer for the Legal Community.”

* Nelson Kull, director, Pathways Drop-In Center, “My Life With Schizophrenia.”

* Panel discussion “My Client Has A Mental Illness: What You Need to Know About Representing A Client with Mental Illness,” featuring moderator 11th Circuit Judge Steven Leifman, who is chairman of the Florida Supreme Court Task Force on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues in the Court, and panelist Raine Johns, 2012-13 The Florida Bar Public Interest Law Section chair.

* Panel discussion on “What’s Next? Community Resources and Information to Assist You,” featuring moderator The JBA President Michael Freed; panelist Denise Marzullo, Mental Health America of Northeast Florida executive director; panelist Debbie O’Neal of the Mental Health Resource Center; and panelist Jim Clark, Daniel Memorial Inc. president and CEO.
