NEFBA’s Government Affairs Committee: The next Government Affairs Committee meeting will be 8:30 a.m., Thursday, May 26, at the NEFBA offices, 103 Century 21 Drive, Suite 100.
Open congressional seat: After 15 years of representing Northeast Florida in Washington, Congressman Ander Crenshaw has announced he will not seek re-election this year. Crenshaw has a long history of political service, beginning with serving in the Florida House from 1972-78. He also served in the Florida Senate, becoming the first Republican elected president in 118 years in 1992. Former Jacksonville Seriff John Rutherford and State Rep. Lake Ray have confirmed they are candidates for the seat.
Florida House endorsement: NEFBA added three candidates to its list of endorsed candidates for state Legislature positions. They include Sheri Treadwell (House District 11), Mark MacLean (House District 12) and Leslie Dougher (House District 19). They join previously endorsed candidates Sen. Aaron Bean (District 4), Sen. Travis Hutson (District 6), Sen. Rob Bradley (District 7), Sen. Audrey Gibson (District 9), Rep. Reggie Fullwood (District 13), Rep. Jay Fant (District 15), Jason Fischer (District 16), Rep. Travis Cummings (District 18) and Rep. Paul Renner (District 24).

New county commissioner: Gov. Rick Scott appointed Lt. Col. William “Buck” Burney to the Clay County Board of Commissioners to serve during the leave of absence of Commissioner Gavin Rollins for National Guard service, which began in April. Rollins is expected to return in early 2017.
Local election endorsements: NEFBA and the Clay Builders Council announced their endorsement of Craig Aldrich for Clay County sheriff. Aldrich is undersheriff to Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler, who is retiring after 12 years as sheriff. Along with his duties as undersheriff, Aldrich serves his community as president of the Clay County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Council of Clay County and a member of the board of directors of both the PACE Center for Girls and Quigley House.

Florida Power & Light: Representatives from NEFBA recently met with officials of FPL to discuss possible changes that would decrease time delays when working with the utility. The meeting included Andrew Marin, general manager of major projects and construction at Florida Power & Light and local FPL staffers.

Local election endorsement: NEFBA and the Nassau Builders Council announced they are endorsing Dr. Kathy Burns for Nassau County School superintendent. A native of Nassau County and a teacher, Burns has served on the Nassau County School Board since 1998.
