Smart Pharmacy Inc., a Jacksonville specialty pharmacy, filed a notice with the state last week saying it is laying off 73 employees by the end of the year because of “extensive” losses.

The company began the layoffs last week and it expects to complete the process on Dec. 31, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice.

The jobs being cut include pharmacists, customer service representatives and office staff.

“The company suffered extensive business losses over time and attempted to seek new capital through the sale of assets that would support continued operations. The company’s efforts to restructure were unsuccessful,” the WARN notice sale.

“Upon exhausting all possible restructuring options, management determined that the business must lay employees off,” it said.

The notice said the layoffs are at its pharmacy at 14003-1 Beach Blvd. The company also has an office at 3740 St. Johns Bluff Rd.

The notice did not say if the company will remain in business after the unsuccessful restructuring efforts, and company officials did not respond to phone messages.

According to its website, Smart Pharmacy was opened in April 2007 by pharmacists Greg Balotin and Bill Scrogins. It says it is the official pharmacy of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The locally owned company provides personalized compounding and retail pharmacy medicine services.
