The city issued a building permit Aug. 2 for Encompass Health to construct its Jacksonville rehabilitation hospital at a cost of $15.18 million.

The 56,975-square-foot facility will be on 8.4 acres on Village Crossing Drive in Southside Quarter, off Gate Parkway south of Butler Boulevard.

The city issued three permits for a 50-bed hospital, a courtyard pavilion and a dumpster and generator enclosure.

Birmingham, Alabama-based Encompass purchased the property in November for $5,236,068.

It will care for patients recovering from strokes, neurological disorders, orthopedic, cardiac and pulmonary conditions; brain and spinal cord injuries; and amputations.

The facility is expected to be completed in the second half of 2022.

Brasfield & Gorrie is the contractor on the project.

Southside Quarter is a mixed-use development on Gate Parkway, west of Interstate 295 near Ikea. It comprises office space, apartments, town houses, restaurant space and medical space. Houston-based Hines is the developer on the project.

Encompass also plans to build a 47,700-square-foot, 40-bed hospital at northwest Silver Lane and Florida 207 in St. Augustine. It will be operational by the first quarter of 2022.

The St. Johns County Commission approved $786,305 in incentives for that project, which Encompass estimates will cost $30 million to build.
