Ascension St. Vincent’s is creating a $15 million in-patient rehabilitation unit at its Southside hospital at 4201 Belfort Road.

When it opens in July it will have 22 beds and 15,000 square feet of space.

It will service patients having major neurological, cardiovascular or orthopedic post-care needs.

To receive treatment, a patient must be referred by a physician for acute inpatient rehabilitation. When that is completed, patients can use the facilities for continued outpatient rehab.

“The inpatient unit will provide patients with the opportunity to have intensive, comprehensive rehabilitation multiple days per week, in conjunction with other acute hospital services should they be required,” said Kristen Gerking, director of clinical operations for the new unit, in a release.

The rehab facility is another facet of Ascension St. Vincent’s concentration on stroke care, according to the release.

The hospital recently opened a hybrid operating room and hired 15 clinicians over the last year devoted to stroke patient care.

It also is converting its riverfront nursing unit in Riverside into a neurology-specific intensive care unit.
