The Jacksonville Beach Planning Commission voted 5-0 on May 22 to approve the proposed Strings Sports Brewery to replace the former Terry’s Country Store at 1618 Penman Road.

The Planning and Development Department recommended approving the application.

No one spoke in opposition at the May 22 meeting.

It will be the second Strings Sports Bar and Brewery. The first is at 1850 N. Main St. in Springfield.

Construction is expected to begin this summer with a 2024 opening. The store will be converted into Strings.

Scott Adeeb of Team Adeeb Inc. of Jacksonville purchased the property Jan. 13 for $1.5 million from Karen S. Brown, Susan Renee Elliot and Jennifer D. Scott of Jacksonville.

Plans call for a restaurant and brewery and outdoor seating facing Penman Road.

Strings serves sports restaurant fare. It regularly serves 10 to 14 of its own beers on tap.

Adeeb’s sons, Colby and Trevor Adeeb, brew the beer.

During his presentation to the commission, Adeeb mentioned his family’s longtime connection to the Beaches.

At one time the Adeeb family owned the Sea Turtle Inn, which is now One Ocean, in Atlantic Beach. The family also owns Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q.

Adeeb told the commission he is operating a restaurant, not a bar.

He said he expects Strings to be closed by 11 p.m. daily. He said the restaurant’s slogan is “Family. Beer. Sports.”

“We’re family-friendly, family-oriented. And that’s kind of our little niche and what we created and we’re looking forward to doing the same thing out here at the beach,” he said.

Plans call for garage doors that can be opened but this is not counted as outdoor seating per code, according the planning commission report.

The owners will have to construct a compatibility buffer behind the restaurant to separate it from single-family housing to the west.

Terry’s Country Store closed the Penman location in October 2022.

The former grocery store was built in 1964 on a 0.6-acre lot. The building is 7,271 square feet.
