A Fleming Island Zaxby’s is moving – next door.
Clay County is reviewing plans for the chicken fingers chain to relocate from 1525 to 1517 County Road 220.
Zaxbys is moving into the space of a closed Whataburger.
The current Zaxbys and its future location are on outparcels in front of a former Winn-Dixie that is being converted into an Aldi in the Town Center at Eagle Harbor shopping center.
Nearby restaurants include Ruby Tuesday and Chick-fil-A.
A Zaxbys associate said the move will allow for “upgraded” appliances in the space.
Jacksonville-based Goodson Bergen & Associates is the civil engineer. Hill Foley Rossi & Associates LLC, based in Duluth, Georgia, is the architect.
Ron Gosselin is the developer for the Fleming Island store. Zaxbys franchisee Cash Jasz Inc. and Gosselin have been opening locations in Northeast Florida.
The closed Whataburger building, built in 2004, is owned by Jr Jasz Holding LLC. It bought it for $600,000 in 2021 from Lake Charles Naval Stores Co.
The current Zaxbys, built in 2003, is owned by Jacksonville-based University Ptnrs LLC. It bought it in 2021 for $835,000.
On Nov. 18, Cash Jasz Inc. and Gosselin opened the first Zaxbys to-go only location at 9031 New Kings Road in the Dinsmore area of Northwest Jacksonville, at northeast New Kings Road and Interstate 295.
Another is planned at 6733 103rd St. in Westside.
Zaxbys, founded in 1990, specializes in chicken and salads. There are 950 locations in 17 states. Its headquarters is in Atlanta.
