Baptist Health has chosen Thomas J. Gough is its executive vice president and chief operating officer after a national search, the healthcare system announced Aug. 12.
In a news release, Baptist Health said Gough would guide efforts to advance operations, strengthen quality and patient safety, enhance patient experience and support sustainable growth. In addition, he would work to align clinical and operational priorities and expand access to integrated care.
Gough succeeds President and CEO Matthew A. Zuino as COO. Zuino held that position for about six years before he was elevated to the top leadership position effective January 2026.
“Baptist Health is entering a new chapter of growth and innovation and Gough brings the leadership experience needed to help us build for the future,” Zuino said in the release.
“By aligning strategy, operational excellence and patient-centered care, he will play a critical role in expanding Baptist Health’s impact on the communities we serve.”
According to the release, Gough has nearly 40 years of executive leadership experience, most recently as executive vice president and COO at WakeMed Health and Hospital System in Raleigh, North Carolina.
He previously worked with Care New England, Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. He holds degrees from the University of Minnesota and Penn State University, where he was an academic All-American on the track team.
