When I first stepped into the role of director of pro bono at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid in September 2022, it was, in many ways, on a bit of a whim.
Before I decided to step away from private practice, I was approached by Kathy Para, who asked if I would be interested in taking on this role. At that time, I was searching for a new path—one that would allow me to stay connected to the law while making a more direct impact in my community.
What I could not have anticipated at the time was that this opportunity would become one of the greatest joys of my professional career.
On May 7, I am leaving JALA. Beginning May 8, I will transition into a new role as a general magistrate for the 4th Judicial Circuit in Clay County.
As I prepare to make this transition, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary support, encouragement and dedication that have defined this journey.
One of my first Bar Bulletin articles included the following Helen Keller quote: “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”
That sentiment has remained a steady reminder throughout my time in this role. It reflects what I have witnessed every day in this work—the power of individuals choosing to do what they can, when they can, to make a meaningful difference.
It has been an honor to work alongside such a committed and compassionate community. Whether you volunteered your time at one of our clinics, mentored a new attorney, accepted a case or simply helped spread the word about the importance of pro bono service, you have played a meaningful role in advancing access to justice in our community.
Because of your dedication, we have grown JALA’s pro bono program into one that is now nationally recognized as a leader—an achievement that belongs to each of you who gave your time and talent to this work.
As I depart, I am confident the program will be left in the capable hands of Stacey DeLuca, our current deputy director, who will serve as interim director. I encourage you to reach out to Stacey and continue your involvement, and to visit www.jaxlegalaid.org/pro-bono to explore ongoing opportunities. There is still much work to be done, and your continued commitment remains essential.
While I am excited for what lies ahead, I remain steadfast in my belief that pro bono work is not just a professional responsibility, it is a vital force in bridging the justice gap. The need continues to far exceed the resources available and it is only through continued engagement that we can ensure more individuals and families receive the legal help they deserve.
No matter how much time you can dedicate to pro bono work, rest assured that your impact is far-reaching.
I encourage you to keep saying “yes” when you can, to remain open to opportunities to serve and to continue being advocates not only for your clients, but for the broader principle of equal access to justice.
Thank you again for your support, your partnership and your unwavering commitment to this mission. It has truly been a privilege to serve in this role.
With sincere gratitude and best wishes.
