Florida Coastal School of Law’s Moot Court Program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to the latest national point totals compiled by the University of Houston Law Center.
The ranking was achieved after the school won first- and second place at the Elon University Billings, Exum & Frye National Moot Court Competition in North Carolina.
It was the first time that the championship round competitors in an Elon University moot court competition were from the same law school.
Both teams are coached by Florida Coastal professors Alan Williams and Melissa Coll.
Forty-one teams from 28 law schools participated Oct. 10-12 in three preliminary rounds of oral argument, after which the field was narrowed for octofinal, quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds.
The finalists argued a hypothetical U.S. Supreme Court case before a panel of judges from federal court, North Carolina appellate court and two former justices of the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
Florida Coastal’s winning team received a replica of Elon Law’s Chief Justices’ Cup; the school name will be engraved on the permanent trophy that resides at Elon University School of Law.
Each member of the first-place team also received a plaque.
The Billings, Exum & Frye National Moot Court Competition honors former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justices Rhoda Bryan Billings, James Exum and Henry E. Frye, founding members of Elon Law’s advisory board.
