Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who once represented a firm at the center of an Internet gambling scandal, has resigned from office.
Carroll is resigning amid an investigation into her involvement with Allied Veterans of the World.
Carroll, a Fleming Island resident, gave her resignation letter to Gov. Rick Scott late Monday. Her resignation is effective immediately.
The resignation comes one day after she was interviewed about her involvement with Allied Veterans of the World, which is the center of a racketeering investigation.
The co-owner of the nonprofit Internet cafe company and its attorney were arrested Tuesday in connection to allegations of illegal gambling, money laundering and mail fraud.
Nelson Cuba, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, FOP Vice President Robbie Freitas and at least five other people are also under arrest in connection with the investigation.
Carroll once represented the Allied Veterans firm and is resigning now that the firm is the center of an Internet gambling scandal.
Scott chief of staff Adam Hollingsworth released a statement:
"Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll consulted for Allied Veterans while serving as a member of the Florida House of Representatives in 2009 and 2010. She was interviewed by Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers Tuesday regarding her work with the company. Lt. Gov. Carroll resigned in an effort to keep her former affiliations with the company from distracting from the administration's important work on behalf of Florida families. She made the right decision for the state and her family."
Hollingsworth said the governor would address her resignation later today.
Carroll's ties to the company were questioned when, while serving in the Florida House, she proposed a bill that would benefit Internet cafes.
Her resignation letter to Scott, dated March 12, says:
"Effective immediately, I hereby resign the Office of Lieutenant Governor of the State of Florida. It has been an honor to have served the State of Florida in this capacity."
