Mayo Clinic in Florida is investing in innovation-related resources and a network to connect talent to them.

Launched in 2020, the Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange is headquartered at Mayo’s Jacksonville campus.

Mayo said the exchange provides fast, impartial connections between staff and external collaborators to drive new business models, treatments and cures to benefit patients at scale.

It said that in two years, membership includes 60 startups from around the world and more than 1,300 Mayo Clinic staff across the Mayo Clinic network.

Mayo has three primary campuses: Rochester, Minnesota; Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona; and Jacksonville.

Recent collaborations include:

• Neuroglee Therapeutics’ work with Mayo psychologist Melanie Chandler. It is transforming the Healthy Action to Benefit Independence & Thinking Program to significantly increase access for those living with mild cognitive impairment and their support partner.

• College partnerships: Undergraduate engineering students from Florida A&M University, Florida State University College of Engineering and the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University are working on projects with Mayo staff. A total of 25 cohorts have been active to date, Mayo said.

• Carbon Ion Treatment Therapy, a collaboration with Hitachi Ltd., is part of Mayo’s integrated oncology facility that is under construction. It will be the first such location in North America. The treatment has the potential for treating patients with challenging cancers that do not respond well to available therapies.
