Joanelle Mulrain is the owner of Mulrain Resource Group, a consulting firm specializing in strategic planning, marketing and advertising for health care institutions. She is also a part-time strategic analyst for St. Johns Investment Management Company. A passive realtor, she will soon be marketing Woodland Estates in Nassau County.

WHAT’S REWARDING ABOUT STRATEGIC PLANNING?

“The successes they [her clients] are able to achieve on their own. I’m urging someone to look at what they’re doing in a different way that may have value added benefit. I’m good at tweaking things that are already there and taking it to the next level.”

WHAT’S MOST CHALLENGING?

“Managing time. Because of technology, people don’t need offices anymore. The time you were given to do something in the past is measured in nanoseconds now.”

WHERE DID SHE LEARN HER TRADE?

Baptist/St. Vincent’s Health System is where she served as vice president of corporate communications and subsequently as a senior strategic consultant in external program management. She is author of the book “A Tradition of Excellence,” a history of Baptist Hospital.

AN EVOLVING BUSINESS

“It’s interesting to watch health care and all its changes. I recall the shortage of nurses and breakthroughs in medicine: new pharmaceuticals, genetics and research. It’s an exciting time to be in health care.”

EDUCATION

Mulrain holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Jacksonville University and a degree in pottery. She has also studied archaeology at the University of Guadalajara.

HOMETOWN

Jacksonville.

FAMILY

A widow, Mulrain resides in her historic Grenada home, which was built in 1936, with her two sons Jeffry and John. Because of a history of breast cancer on her mother’s side, Mulrain is a big proponent of the Buddy Check [breast cancer awareness] program.

MANY MOONS AGO

Other occupations include interior designer, travel agent, non-profit fund raiser, former proprietor of the short-lived Mulrain Gardens antique shop in Miramar and special events director.

VOLUNTEER EXTRAORDINAIRE

Mulrain dispenses free strategic advice to non-profits such as the Arthritis Foundation, the Diabetes Association and the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art.

AFFILIATIONS

A 2001 graduate of Leadership America, Mulrain is on the board of the Modern Art Council, The River Club, American Heart Association and the Women’s Board at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. She is a member of Jacksonville Women’s Network, Junior League, San Jose Country Club, Epping Forest Yacht Club and the Red Hat Society.

HOBBIES

A certified master gardener, Mulrain appreciates the visual art of gardening most. She also revels in antiques, traveling abroad and the writings of Oscar Wilde. More mainstream interests include tuning into the Discovery Channel, dining at Uncle Pu’s Chinese Restaurant or watching the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” She is in the process of writing two children’s books.

WHO’S YOUR HERO?

“[Chamber of Commerce president] Carol Thompson. When I met her she was a nurse in a white cap in the ICU unit at Baptist. She broke through the glass ceiling. Carol has become a mentor for many and a role model for women.”
