Page Daniel is an artist specializing in pictures constructed out of fabric.

WHERE CAN YOU SEE HER WORK?

Dabbling in folk art for 20 years, Daniel has works displayed at the Osborn Center, the I. M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless and the BellSouth tower. Her creation purchased by the phone company was stolen, however. She has won a prize in a national art show in New York City for her work.

NEXT ON THE AGENDA?

A design for St. Marks Episcopal Church.

WHY FOCUS ON THIS MEDIUM?

“I saw an article in a magazine and thought it would be fun. I went to a workshop by [artist] Martha Mood and took lessons. I didn’t know anything about sewing, I just did this for fun.”

WHAT’S MOST ENJOYABLE ABOUT IT?

“Making something out of nothing. They’re just little scraps that people throw out but one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I see pictures in lots of things. The sewing I could care less about. It’s the contrast that makes it look good — putting things together for a striking effect. I look to compare colors and the textures are wonderful.”

WHAT’S MOST CHALLENGING?

“Using something that nobody else wants.”

WHERE DOES SHE GET HER MATERIAL?

“I have friends who are decorators and they give me their leftover pieces.” Daniel uses velvet, denim, felt and any other fabrics that are suitable for the picture. Different swatches are chosen depending on the subject and desired look.

HOMETOWN

Jacksonville.

OTHER THINGS SHE DOES FOR FUN

Trips to the North Carolina mountains, gardening, reading biographies, exercising and spending time at The Florida Yacht Club or Timuquana Country Club take up the remainder of her spare moments.

COLLEGE

Daniel obtained a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Holton Arms in Washington. She studied English and creative writing at the University of Florida. She currently takes part in a local writer’s group, penning short stories.

FAMILY

Ortega is home to Daniel, and you probably also know her as the widow of former Times-Union publisher, consolidation leader and community activist J.J. Daniel, who passed away in 1990. She has two grown daughters, Eleanor and Jackie, and three granddaughters.

WHO’S YOUR HERO?

Daniel selected consumer advocate Ralph Nader because she is an environmentalist and loves nature.
