About 275 Jacksonville Bar Association members gathered at the Omni Thursday to hear former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Jeff Lageman talk football.

Lageman discussed his role as a player representative, how the salary cap works and his days on the field.

“Any time you hear of players doing a great thing and helping the team with the salary cap, it’s a bunch of B.S. All the team did in fact was lower the base salary and give it to them in a check as a signing bonus,” said Lageman.

As for this season, Lageman said it all depends on the health of the team.

“I think they could win 10 games if they’re healthy. The problem is that they’re not.”

In the wake of last week’s terrorist attacks, JBA members were asked their thoughts regarding how the terrorist attacks will affect civil liberties. Here are some of the responses:

“At this point, they [liberties] won’t be jeopardized but they may be inconvenienced.”

Judge Hal Taylor

“People have to recognize that we must make sacrifices to defend it [our civil rights].”

Arthur Hernandez of Bullock, Childs, Pendley & Reed.

“Any nation at war always has to look inward and make decisions which benefit the whole nation rather than individuals. Some situations may require infringing on civil liberties for security. If it is good for the country, it is contemplated by the Constitution and executive powers.”

Judge Gary Flower

“In the short term it will [have an impact]. In the long term things will go back to the way they were. People will start resenting any curtailment of their rights.”

Ronald Davis from Milton, Leach, D’Andrea & Ritter

“The American people are not going to stand infringing on their liberties two months from now.”

Mary Beth van der Zee from Blankenship Law Firm

“Civil liberties are going to be reduced by the fight against terror.”

Kenneth Wright from Datz, Jacobson, Lembcke & Wright.

“Our liberties will be vindicated.”

Stephen Silkowski
