The Jacksonville Young Lawyers Section in conjunction with Special Olympics — Duval County held its annual Special Olympics Bowling Project at the Jax Lanes Grove Park on Oct. 5. The games featured approximately 135 women athletes who competed in the bowling event. Representatives from the Young Lawyers Section, student volunteers from The Bolles School and Episcopal High School, and other volunteers assisted the athletes during the competition. While the event followed competition rules and scoring, every athlete finished a winner with a ribbon, plenty of polaroid pictures, and “high-fives” to go around.
The Special Olympics bowling event is sponsored each year by the Young Lawyers and it is always a fun and rewarding volunteer experience. I would like to give special thanks to Kevin Cook of Bedell, Dittmar, DeVault, Pillans & Coxe, P.A., Geddes Anderson of Liles, Gavin, Costantino & Murphy, and R. Troy Smith of Smith Hulsey & Busey for organizing and directing this year’s competition. Kevin did most of the legwork prior to the event and Geddes almost single-handedly managed and coordinated the project on the day of the day of the competition. The Young Lawyers Section will be spearheading another Special Olympics event, the Outdoor Games, on Feb. 1 at The Bolles School. If you would like to volunteer for this worthy project, please contact Kevin Cook at 353-0211 or Geddes Anderson at 634-1100.
On the “upcoming events” calendar, YLS has two events in the near future for young lawyers. The Young Lawyers will be hosting a judicial breakfast for the County Court judges on Nov. 21 from 8 - 9 a.m. We have received a very positive response from the judiciary, and are expecting this to be a well-attended breakfast. This is an excellent opportunity for young lawyers to meet our local judges and other lawyers in a fun and casual setting. Please take this opportunity to chat with our judges one on one and let them get to know you. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Ray Ravis at 346-4480 or e-mail at [email protected].
No Young Lawyers “upcoming events” calendar would be complete without a happy hour! We have changed our happy hour location this month to add a little variety to our socializing activities. The next happy hour will be Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at The Grotto in San Marco. Westlaw will be sponsoring this event, so come and enjoy free wine (the good stuff), beer and hors d’oeuvres. For questions about the event, or happy hours in general, call the expert — our Social Chair, Troy Smith at 346-5770, or email at [email protected].
