The United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, is currently accepting applications for three full-time magistrate judge positions, two to be resident in Jacksonville (one of which is currently funded and the other funding is expected to be effective April 1, 2003) and one to be resident in Ft. Myers (funding is expected to be effective April 1, 2003).

The duties for the position are demanding and wide-ranging such as: 1) conduct of most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; 2) trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases; 3) conduct of various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from the judges of the district courts; and 4) trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants. The basic jurisdiction of the United States magistrate judge is specified in 28 U.S.C § 636.

Applicants must use the official application form. The application form may be obtained at the intake counters of the Clerk’s Office in Jacksonville, Ft. Myers, Ocala, Orlando and Tampa or at the Court’s internet website at www.flmd.uscourts.gov.

Applicants must be a resident within the First District, a registered voter, and have been a member in good standing of The Florida Bar for the preceding 10 years. Applications forms are available by downloading the application from The Florida Bar’s website: www.flabar.org or by calling Jeanne Miller at (904) 630-1672. Ten copies of the completed application must be received by Miller no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 at 117 West Duval Street, Suite 480, Jacksonville, FL 32202. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of Nov. 4 in Tallahassee.
