Members of the Downtown Enhancement Committee of the Chamber of Commerce’s Downtown Council met Tuesday morning to discuss the upcoming Skyway Party. Planned for May 17, the event is a progressive party featuring six stops of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s Skyway system.
“The theme of the party is Next Stop — Downtown, and the goal is to show people that the Northbank and Southbank are indeed connected,” said Diantha Grant, chairperson of the Downtown Enhancement Committee. “There is a lot to do in different areas of the city and we want to show that the Skyway is an easy way to get from place to place.”
Skyway Party guests will pay $15 to travel from station to station. Each stop will have its own theme and entertainment, highlighting the businesses and restaurants in the surrounding area. The stations will be set up for art exhibits or live bands, and large party areas are planned for the stops at Hemming Plaza, the Osborn Center and Kings Avenue.
“Planning is going really well,” said Jimmy Johns, co-chairman of the event. “Everyone involved is very excited and pleased with the way results are going.”
JTA thinks the event will be a way to highlight the connection between the Northbank and Southbank that its Skyway system provides.
“We’re very excited about showcasing the Skyway,” said Stephanie Barker, communications coordinator with JTA. “We want more people to be aware of its capabilities, and we feel like this is a great opportunity.”
