Jaguars attorney helps hunt for coach

Paul Vance has been visible lately in his involvement with seeking a new head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He and the team’s primary owner, Wayne Weaver, have been interviewing potential coaches and general managers and he’s widely considered one of the owner’s chief advisors. When Weaver held a press conference Dec. 30 to announce the firing of Tom Coughlin, Vance was only one of two team executives (marketing VP Dan Connell was the other) invited to attend.

HIS TITLE

Vance was promoted to senior vice president, football operations/general counsel in 2001, taking over many of the responsibilities of Michael Huyghue, who left the team to start a sports agent business. Vance had been the team’s general counsel for seven years.

HIS JOB

He’s responsible for negotiating player contracts and administering the salary cap. He also oversees the team’s overall budget.

WITH THE JAGS

He was one of the first executives hired, joining the team in 1994 after working with a law firm in Stamford, Conn. Weaver met him when the firm did work with Touchdown Jacksonville!, the organization founded to get an NFL franchise for the city.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Rochester, law degree from Columbia.

COMMUNITY

He’s on the board of the Museum of Science and History and the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation and serves on the Business Advisory Council of the University of North Florida.

FAMILY

Wife Jane, four children.

RESIDES

In the San Jose area.
