Sheriff Nat Glover and nearly 40 representatives from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Florida Thursday as part of National Hunger Awareness Day.
“I’m here today to pledge my support for this organization and all that it has accomplished,” said Glover. “There are so many hungry families in Jacksonville and I’m sensitive to them. I think we all need to be.”
Following opening remarks and brief addresses by Food Bank director Tim Davis and Glover, volunteers began assembling “family boxes,” which can feed a family of four for two days.
“This is really just a way for us to get out and promote hunger awareness,” said Amanda Holmes, a special projects and grant manager from the Food Bank. “We invited the JSO to get involved today and we’re happy they accepted.”
The Food Bank distributes food to private, non-profit agencies, including The Salvation Army, Clara White Mission and Hubbard House.
“It was a great success,” said Roger Palmer, the operations manager at the Food Bank. “We put together 150 boxes that will go out to hungry families in Jacksonville and we hope the word gets out and people continue to help.”
