The Unicorn of Halifax, a tall ship registered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is docked on the St. Johns River behind the Adam’s Mark Hotel until Jan. 11.

The Unicorn, owned by New Jersey businessman Jonathan Santa-Maria, began its journey Dec. 13 from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The ship is on its way to Ft. Pierce, where it will stay in port for the remainder of the winter.

“The Unicorn is being used as part of a training program for the owner’s company,” said Amanda Graham, a 23-year-old deckhand from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. “When it’s not being used for work, it will be a private yacht for the family.”

Graham has been with the Unicorn since November after she worked two sailing seasons on the Blue Nose II, the ship featured on the Canadian dime. While working on the Unicorn, she and the crew have stopped in many East Coast ports on their way to Ft. Pierce.

“Jacksonville is a beautiful city,” said Graham, “and it’s been one of the many places we’ve gotten to visit on our way to winter port.”
