Susan Hartley, a commissioner with the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission, may not seek reappointment for her third and final term with the City agency.

A board member since June 2001, Hartley would be the third JEDC commissioner to step down this year. Brad Glass of the Auchter Company and most recently Fred Franklin of law firm Rogers, Towers announced their resignations citing demanding schedules.

“My second term has expired and I will either seek reappointment or the mayor will find a replacement,” said Hartley, who owns H & R Coffee.

If Hartley does not get reappointed, she has said she will stay on until her replacement is found.

However, there are several signs that Hartley will not continue as a JEDC board member much longer. No legislation approving her reappointment is working its way through City Council. Hartley has met with Mayor John Peyton regarding her possible replacement. And, she may have political aspirations in 2007.

“I would consider possibly running for public office in 2007,” said Hartley, who lives in Art Shad’s district, but would consider running for one of three at-large spots currently held by term-limited Council members.

Hartley said she knew of at least one person interested in her seat on the Commission.

“Gwen Griggs is an attorney and I have heard through the grapevine that Council member Shad had recommended her,” said Hartley. “And, she has expressed interest to me.”

Hartley said whether she’s reappointed or not, she’d like to remain involved in the JEDC’s small business growth and development program.

“I will certainly be an advocate and be a part of the program, but I’m not sure of what level I can participate,” said Hartley, adding she spoke to Peyton on Thursday about her seat on the Commission, her replacement and how she can stay involved.
