• Tickets to the ACC Championship are going quickly. Champion’s Club seats are sold out, but there is still some lower bowl seating left for $80. Champion’s Club seats for the Toyota Gator Bowl are still left and go for $55 each.
• According to City Council Director Cheryl Brown, the Council’s Public Information Officer position formerly held by Cindy Warner (who left for a similar job with the Supervisor of Elections Office) won’t be filled. When Warner left, the duties were dispersed among staff and it will stay that way. The decision leaves an open office and it saves Council about $60,000 a year.
• There are two new big developments that require City approval working their way through Council. The Lem Turner Townhomes project where about 600 condominiums are planned for 114 acres on Lem Turner. Work is expected to start in 2007 and wrap up in 2011. The other project is the Glen Crest development on Kernan Boulevard South and will be 450 condos on 47 acres. Both projects require fair share agreements between the developer and the City.
• It wasn’t hard to spot former Jacksonville U. basketball great Artis Gilmore at Monday’s Rotary Club meeting. He was about a foot taller than anyone else in the room.
• The Firehouse Subs men’s doubles tennis tournament at Deerwood Country Club May 20-22 was a huge success. Over $100,000 was raised for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
• Ch. 12 has a new reporter who comes with national and regional accolades. Grayson Kamm won a regional Emmy, a regional Edward R. Murrow and a state Associated Press award for a half-hour special report he investigated and wrote called “Losing Hope” at WWSB in Sarasota. Kamm also won a national journalism award from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation while studying at the University of Florida. He and his wife moved to Jacksonville to begin their careers, be close to friends and family, and watch Kamm’s favorite football team, the Jaguars, play.
