JALA’s Equal Justice event announced

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. is holding its annual Equal Justice Awards Reception Nov. 15 at The River Club from 6-8 p.m. Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Barbara J. Pariente will be the keynote speaker.

Coker receives AFTL award

Howard Coker, partner with Coker, Myers, Schickel, Sorenson & Green, received the B.J. Masterson Award for Professionalism from the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers Oct. 28. Coker received the award, which recognizes excellence in advocacy and those who have advanced ethics and professionalism in the practice of law, at the AFTL’s Founder’s Lunch in Orlando. The award is named in memory of former AFTL President B.J. Masterson and is given out only when a candidate merits it.

Free ABOTA seminar Tuesday

The American Board of Trial Advocates is presenting a free instructional seminar on professionalism and civility in the courtroom Tuesday at Florida Coastal School of Law. Featured speakers for the event are Circuit Court Judges McRae Mathis and Waddell Wallace and State Attorney Harry Shorstein. Also speaking at the event are ABOTA Jacksonville chapter president Jep Barbour, Pajcic and Pajcic attorney Tad Griffin, Mary Bland Love of Gobelman and Love and Stacey Watson May of the Jacksonville Bar Mentor Program. This is a seminar designed for law students and young lawyers and event chair Tad Griffin encourages ABOTA members to send their young lawyers. A reception follows the event.

Whitman selected for national ABOTA board

Attorney Josh Whitman of Milton, Leach, Whitman, D’Andrea, Charek and Milton, P.A. recently received the honor of being selected by incoming American Board of Trial Advocates president John Phelps to serve as an additional national board member for the association.

Legal research for prizes

The Florida Bar is offering members a chance to win a free one-year subscription to the Fastcase legal research database (value $195). Members can win by answering some legal research questions available on the Bar’s website. Submissions are due no later than midnight on Nov. 18.

Board of Governors deadline approaching

Nominating petitions for the 2006 election for the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar are due to the headquarters office before 5 p.m. Dec. 15. Petitions must be signed by at least five members in good standing from the same judicial circuit as the nominee.
