• New advertisers pop up each year at the stadium and Modis has its name prominent this time. The staffing company’s signage has replaced ADT atop the Terrace Suite.

• The team from Columbus, Ga. won the Little League World Series Monday by beating a team from Japan, 2-1. What’s the significance locally? Jaguars owners Wayne and Delores Weaver were both born in Columbus.

• You may remember Heather White, a disk jockey at several stations here who also did a stint with Jaguars’ coverage at AM-690. She’s now in Texas.

• The elections office says over 4,000 people voted the first week of early voting — 4,181 to be exact.

• Different kind of cats. The Jaguars will play at Alltel Stadium Saturday night at 7 p.m. Not the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Southern University Jaguars. Southern will face Bethune-Cookman College in the annual Gateway Classic. Tickets are available at the Arena box office and through Ticketmaster for $20 general admission, $30 for club-level seating.

• Wednesday is the last day you can request an absentee ballot for the Sept. 5 primary election. Call 630-1414 or visit the Supervisor of Elections office at 105 E. Monroe St.

• It’s been almost six months since the Salvation Army’s annual Celebrity Chefs event, but they still have cookbooks for sale. Each spiral-bound recipe book includes nearly 300 recipes from local celebrities. The local Women’s Auxiliary is selling the cookbooks for $20 each to benefit Salvation Army programs.

• How busy is Florida Bar President Hank Coxe these days? In addition to his usual duties as one of the city’s top criminal defense attorney, as Bar president he said he’s getting about 20 speaking requests a week and 300 or so e-mails a day about either work or his role as Bar president.

• The college football season hasn’t started yet, but the Gator Bowl Association has plenty going on these days. Their next meeting is Sept. 7 at the Crowne Plaza and they are gearing up for their first Gator Bowl Committee trip. They’ll head to Atlanta for the Oct. 7 game between Maryland and Georgia Tech. The trip costs $550 and includes airfare, two nights lodging, ground transportation, a pre-game tailgate and a ticket to the game.

• Speaking of the GBA, it’s Third Annual Red Wagon Parade benefiting Wolfson Children’s Hospital is Sept. 9 at Hemming Plaza. This year’s parade will also help kick off Mayor John Peyton’s Rally Jacksonville! registration. Each of the wagons in the parade will be decorated to represent popular children’s books. Starting at 9 a.m., they’ll parade around Hemming Plaza into the Main Library.

• One more. The GBA is looking for performers for the Wachovia Gator Bowl pre-game show. You get a shirt, a ticket to the game and other stuff. If interested log on to www.gatorbowl.com and register before Nov. 13. One caveat: you have to be between 7 and 21 years old.

• The National Association for College Admission Counseling will sponsor the national College Fair in Jacksonville Oct. 14 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Osborn Center. The event will be attended by representatives from more than 100 national and international colleges and universities and is open to high school students and their parents. Sessions will be conducted in both English and Spanish. Admission is free, $5 per vehicle for parking. Info: www.jaxcollegefair.com.
