University of Florida Levin College of Law

Twenty experts from four countries — including legal scholars, researchers, technologists, journalists and consumer advocates — will discuss questions behind identity theft and data security in a conference at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law Friday and Saturday titled “Data Devolution: Corporate Information Security, Consumers and the Future of Regulation.” The conference is “intended to provide an overview of the social problems associated with weak information security,” according to UF Assistant Professor of Law Andrea Matwyshyn, the conference’s organizer. Florida Coastal School of Law

As part of its 10th anniverary celebration, Florida Coastal will host an Issues Forum 2006 on Feb. 28 that will focus on high-profile death penalty cases. School Dean Peter Goplerud said at least two law professors who served as cousel during the Oklahoma City bombing trial will be on the panel. Other events to mark the school’s anniversary are in the works.

St. Thomas University School of Law

St. Thomas University School of Law continues its Distinguished Speaker Series with a speech by author and political activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., (left) Thursday at noon in the St. Thomas University School of Law Moot Court Room – 16401 N.W. 37th Ave., Miami Gardens. Kennedy will discuss the important role natural surroundings play in the work, health, and identity of Americans today. The event is free, but space is limited. Florida State University College of Law

The Florida Bar Foundation awarded the Children’s Advocacy Center at the Florida State University College of Law a total of $100,000 between two grants. The grants are to be used on behalf of children in the areas of special education and health care, and domestic violence and family law. The grants from the Florida Bar Foundation include a $75,000 Children’s Legal Services Grant and a $25,000 Law School Civil Clinic Grant.

University of Georgia School of Law

The Association of American Law Schools has named Beth S. Kirch, the director of Legal Career Services at the University of Georgia School of Law, as the 2006 recipient of the Kutulakis Student Services Award. Presented annually, the award recognizes the contributions of an institution, administrator or law professor in the area of service to students.     

University of Miami School of Law

The University of Miami School of Law will host a symposium discussing Professor D. Marvin Jones’ book: Race, Sex, and Suspicion: The Myth of the Black Male, Feb. 17 from 2-5 p.m. at the school in Coral Gables, Fla., Room 352. A panel of nationally known legal scholars will discuss the topic of Race and Democracy, using the text of Professor Jones’ work as a backdrop for analysis, dialogue and debate. Those interested in the field of Critical Race Theory, the Constitutional and social issues raised by the 2000 election, the renewed attacks on affirmative action, the disparate treatment of the hurricane victims, or the future of civil and political rights for minorities and people of color in the 21st century are invited to attend.

Stetson University College of Law

The Stetson University College of Law Trial Team won The Florida Bar Chester Bedell Memorial Mock Trial Competition for the 16th time on Jan. 19 in Miami. Stetson’s team of Arturo Rios, Angie Torrents, Senovia Lance and Ruel Smith defeated students from Florida State University in the final round of the state-wide competition. Rios was named Best Advocate for the competition. Judge David Demers, Susan Demers, Creighton Shafer and Professor Roberta Flowers coached the winning team. In November, a Stetson Law trial team won both first and second place at the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers 2005 Honorable E. Earle Zehmer Memorial Mock Trial Competition and won first place at the 15th annual Cathy Bennett National Criminal Trial Competition.
