How did you get involved?

I played soccer growing up in Macon, Ga. During my senior year I was captain of my high school’s first soccer team. I had never coached soccer until the twins started playing. No experience is needed to coach at JYSC and our director of coaching and other professional coaches are always available with helpful tips and suggestions. The only requirement to coach is a positive attitude and lots of patience. After coaching the twins for several years, I was recruited to serve on the league’s board. We have 12 board members, eight voting and four non-voting. We meet at least once a month and handle a wide range of matters from major budget issues to when the rye grass gets planted.

Why did you get involved?

I believe that team sports are an important part of growing up. JYSC provides an opportunity for kids of all ages to play soccer and enjoy being part of a team. I was happy to answer the call to help JYSC continue their good work.

What have you learned/achieved through the experience?

JYSC is a much larger organization than I realized. We manage three parks, Chuck Rodgers, Losco and Earl Johnson. We have a great Director of Operations, Jay Golomb, and Director of Coaching, Craig Heseltine. Jay and Craig work diligently to keep the day-to-day operations running smoothly. Over 1,000 kids a year play at JYSC. We have wonderful parents and volunteers who give their time to coach our players.

What was the last book you read or are reading?

“Island of The Lost” by Joan Druett. It’s based on a true story about a shipwreck and survival on the Auckland Islands.
