A new program established by the Hispanic Bar Association of Northeast Florida will aim at fostering the relationship between the Hispanic Bar and Florida Coastal School of Law students who belong to the school’s Hispanic American Law Student Association.

The initial meeting of the two groups is set for Feb. 28 at Cuba Libre, which is next to Havana Jax on Atlantic Boulevard. During the reception, the Hispanic Bar will officially announce the new mentor/mentee relationship.

“The mentoring relationship is of benefit to both the mentor and the mentee,” said Hispanic Bar President, Ada Hammond, a partner in the law firm of Johnston & Hammond. “The HALSA student will benefit by gaining a firsthand view of the practice of law and by the advice and guidance of a more experienced practitioner. The mentor can benefit from assistance with research, drafting and other tasks that can be provided by the mentee under the mentor’s supervision.”

As part of the program, the HALSA student will also assist his or her mentor with Spanish interpretation if the need arises with a client. This facet of the program is consistent with the Hispanic Bar’s mission to assist the Spanish speaking community with legal issues.

Currently, there are more than 15 mentor partnerships. In addition to being a kickoff to the partnership, the reception is also an opportunity for Hispanic Bar members and Florida Coastal students to network.

Florida Coastal professor Mike Jorgenson is the HALSA faculty advisor. For more information, call Paola Parra at Harris, Guidi, Rosner, Dunlap, et al. at 398-9002.
