The national law firm Holland & Knight this week announced that Miami partner Steve Sonberg has been elected managing partner of the 1,150-lawyer firm. Sonberg was elected during the firm’s annual meeting in Orlando, and will begin his five-year term April 15. Sonberg, 60, replaces Howell W. Melton, Jr., who announced last month that he would not seek another term.

“I am proud and honored to accept the position of managing partner of Holland & Knight,” said Sonberg as he addressed the firm’s lawyers in Orlando. “Holland & Knight has a long, rich history. The firm’s reputation, our lawyers and the trust our clients place in us are our most valuable assets. We must remain responsive to our clients’ needs by developing innovative and creative approaches to our delivery of the highest quality service. I look forward to our bright future.”

A partner with Holland & Knight for the last 15 years, Sonberg served as chair of the firm’s 375-person Business Law Section for the past five years. Previously, he served as a member of the firm’s Directors Committee for eight years, and led the firm’s corporate practice in South Florida.

Holland & Knight’s Jacksonville office is in the Bank of America tower.

With more than 30 years of legal experience, Sonberg is a corporate lawyer who has practiced primarily in the areas of domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, and securities law. He has advised public and private companies, boards of directors, board committees, and corporate executives. His clients have included, among others, pharmaceutical, transportation, and technology companies.

Sonberg is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Miami. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, and served as Chairman of the Board from 1990-96.

Holland & Knight has 17 offices in the United States. Other offices around the world are located in Beijing and Mexico City, with representative offices in Caracas and Tel Aviv. Holland & Knight is among the world’s 18 largest firms, providing representation in litigation, business, real estate and governmental law.
