• EverBank and the City are cohosting a press conference Thursday to announce the near tripling of the EverBank Arena Club at the arena. EverBank recently extended its sponsorship deal at the arena by four years at a total of over $1 million. The club area was 5,663 square feet but is now 15,910. Jacksonville Economic Development Commission officials said the extra space is needed to “meet the needs of current clients and the great demand for membership.”

• City Council President Daniel Davis will be out of town (out of the country, actually) all next week. Council VP Ronnie Fussell will run Council while Davis is gone.

• Speaking of Fussell, none of the other 17 Council members have expressed interest in opposing him to succeed Davis.

• Dr. Peter Kuhlman has been elected director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at St. Luke’s Hospital. Kuhlman, a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, has been practicing cardiology in Jacksonville since 1985 and is a partner with St. Luke’s Cardiology Associates A.

• Jacksonville resident James Woods took a unique approach to the recently-imposed stormwater and garbage fees: he sent the entire bill back to City Hall with a full-page explanation as to why he isn’t paying. Topping his list is the fact the citizens of Jacksonville didn’t get to vote on the fees.

• Looking for that artistic outlet outside the office? Try your hand at acting. The University of North Florida is holding public auditions for its production of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” today and tomorrow. The school is looking for 10 men and 5 women of all ages and races to fill roles, as well as musicians and singers for contemporary pop music. Tryouts will be held at the John E. Matthews Computer Science Building from 7–9 p.m., with callbacks on Thursday from 7–9 p.m. For more information, call Dr. Pam Monteleone at 704-3207.

“The duties which a police officer owes to the state are of a most exacting nature. No one is compelled to choose the profession of a police officer, but having chosen it, everyone is obliged to live up to the standard of its requirements. To join in that high enterprise means the surrender of much individual freedom.”
– Calvin Coolidge, U.S. president
