Members of the legal community recently took part in an art show and sale with works by some of their own, all in the name of benefitting a Jacksonville Area Legal Aid program.

Wednesday’s opening reception for the Legal Artwalk Show, a month-long exhibit featuring original artwork created by the legal community, at the Zodiac Grill on the corner of Adams and Hogan streets drew around 100 people even with adverse weather.

“It was a pretty good turnout,” said attorney Deborah Reid, who organized the event. “You couldn’t help the weather, but I saw a lot of faces.”

“It’s a great and needed program,” said April Charney, JALA foreclosure defense expert and creator of the program. “Education on the subject is key and an event like this(Legal Artwalk) is a wonderful way to involve other members of the legal community and community itself with it.”

All proceeds from the event go toward JALACare, a program that teaches students about the dangers of consumer debt through a volunteer program in local schools. Now in its second year, Charney serves as program director and along with funding from sources like the Legal Artwalk show, is looking for other interested attorneys to teach.

Last year’s event raised more than $3,000 for JALA, while this year’s show features the work of 16 attorneys, two of their spouses and one paralegal, and includes paintings of all styles and varieties along with pottery work.
