• Listen when relo people talk
Every real estate company of reasonable size will have a relocation specialist and that person knows something you should know. Even though they’ll be closed-mouthed, a little nugget might slip.
• Don’t discount any information.
It may sound like a rumor, or perhaps gossip, but smoke and fire go together.
• Commercial Realtors know plenty.
Even more than residential agents, knowing about relo prospects is a vital part of every commercial agent’s life, and most of the time a commercial agent will be told way before the word gets to the residential community.
• Join the Chamber.
This is the central point for relocations. You’ll have access to the people who are leading the hunt.
• Read national publications.
For instance, The Wall Street Journal can be a valuable source of information on companies that may be considering a move. Business magazines such as Forbes or Business Week also can be sources but remember that they aren’t as timely.
• Go online.
Don’t listen to those who say newspapers are dying out. Newspapers remain the best source of information and almost all are online. Google the name of the city and the word “newspaper,” then look over its business section.
• Network outside your normal networking area.
Look for opportunities to get close to the business community, such as attending civic club meetings when in-the-know types are speaking.
