• A free family law seminar “Raising the Bar” will be held at the Duval County Courthouse Annex Friday, Oct. 8. The “nuts and bolts and networking” seminar takes place from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Attendees earn 5.50 CLE credit and presenters include Elliot Zisser, Al Datz, Denise Watson, Dale Westling, Hal Castillo, Sharon Johnson, Barry Sinoff, Brian Washington, Alan Jensen, Marla Buchanan and David Garfinkel. • The Florida Bar has been guided by nine different leaders from the Jacksonville legal community and that number could reach double digits as former Jacksonville Bar President and Gray Robinson attorney Grier Wells is considering a run for the position this fall.

• Speaking of Gray Robinson, the firm’s Jacksonville office will celebrate its fifth anniversary Nov. 1, but an unrelated celebration will be winding down by that time as the firm will host its annual Florida-Georgia “Cocktails and Cleats” party Oct. 29.

• LISC Jacksonville has a new member on its board of directors. Linda Persandi, executive vice president and regional retail line of business manager for SunTrust Bank, was recently appointed to the board by Chair J.F. Bryan IV and LISC Jacksonville Executive Director Joni Foster. The nonprofit organization supports community development organizations and focuses on affordable housing and revitalization of residential and commercial corridors.

• Florida’s Small Business Resource Center will be offering a one-day workshop, “The Entrepreneurs Law School: Be Informed, Reduce Your Risk,” at the University of North Florida’s University Center Oct. 22. It’s designed to assist business owners and prospective owners with all the legal issues involved in running a business, and will include legal advisors and professionals involved with corporate law. The workshop will run from 7:45 a.m.– 12:30 p.m. For more information, call 620-2476.

• As if there wasn’t enough stress in their lives already. The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section has created a coed kickball league that will begin play Oct. 6 at Fishweir Park in Riverside. Games will be played Tuesday nights until Dec. 1. For more information contact Charlie Jimerson [email protected].

• A horde of bikers will be cruising around the Baymeadows area tomorrow evening as part of the “Light the City Ride” fundraiser. The annual event is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police to benefit local organizations and will begin and end at the Adamec of Jacksonville. Rider tickets are $35, passenger tickets $25, with the ride starting at 7 p.m.

• Duval County Public School officials have reason to smile, as six Duval County students have been named semifinalists for the 2010 National Achievement Scholarship program. The privately financed scholastic program to recognize promising black students throughout the country began in 1964 and has awarded more than $94 million in scholarships through the years. The six students are among 1,300 across the country. “I am very proud of our students,” said Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals.

• After opening the doors to its restaurant on Monday, Uptown Market had the hot and cold cases humming in its deli section Thursday afternoon. Like any normal deli, it will offer sandwiches and paninis, but this deli also offers everything needed for an entire meal, salads, sides and choice of meat, fish or poultry with a wine pairing available.
