How did you get involved?

• JALACARE — talked to Atheia Inman at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid about helping kids better understand finances before they go to college.

• Pro Bono for Jax Kids program — attended a “Pro Bono You can Handle” continuing legal education program and got information and referral to a pro bono case.

How can someone else get involved?

Call Atheia Inman at 356-8371, ext. 377 for JALACARE, or Jodi Seitlin at 359-5550 for Pro Bono for Jax Kids.

What have you learned/achieved through the experience?

Kids can drive you crazy — in a good way. The kids didn’t know the real cost of credit, check cashing and the negative impact of a bad credit rating, and how it can affect your job. Also, giving time and effort to children can be extremely rewarding. A student did actually ask me if their parents could start a charge account using their name. They didn’t know that the parents could secure a credit card with a child’s social security number. It was bad news, but at least they learned about it. They also really didn’t understand the cost of cashing a check at check cashing centers. That is something they learned they could prevent.

What was the last book you read or are reading?

“The Ministry of Healing”, a book about Christ’s healing ministry in biblical times by Ellen White.
