• The Smith Hulsey & Busey firm hired a sixth-year associate lawyer, Whitney K. McGuire, and two new first-year associates, Allison L. McElhaney and Kevin Wagner, in its complex commercial litigation practice. The three new associates bring the firm to more than 50 attorneys. McGuire has six years of litigation experience with corporate law firms in Florida and California. She earned her juris doctorate degree from the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. McElhaney will work with firm shareholder Lee D. Wedekind III. She and Wagner received their law degrees from the University of Florida College of Law. Wagner will work with firm shareholder James A. Bolling.

• Smith Hulsey & Busey also is mourning the death of firm partner Raymond R. Magley, who died Dec. 10 at the age of 50 after battling brain cancer. Mr. Magley practiced bankruptcy law with Smith Hulsey for 25 years, his entire career. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

• Attorney Richard Alexander has opened his own practice on University Boulevard, The Alexander Law Practice. Admitted to the Bar in 1994, Alexander is formerly of Schutt, Schmidt & Noey.

• Attorney Vanessa Newtson has joined the law office of Mark Rosenblum as an associate. She will continue to practice in the areas of criminal defense and in immigration law. Newtson is formerly of the Law Office of Maggie Jo Hilliard.

• RSM McGladrey and McGladrey & Pullen LLP, providers of assurance, tax and consulting services, won the 2010 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. The firms garnered winning recognition for 53 of their offices across the nation, and four honorable mentions. The six McGladrey offices in Florida, including Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, Melbourne, Naples, Orlando and West Palm Beach, were honored with 2010 Alfred P. Sloan Awards. In addition, McGladrey’s Coral Gables office received an honorable mention. The Sloan Award is part of the When Work Works project, an ongoing initiative of the Families and Work Institute in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce and the Twiga Foundation.
