• Ready to HobNob? Candidates and voters can mingle at the 2010/2011 Political HobNob event 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Hyatt downtown. The event is free and open to the public.

• The Museum of Science & History will celebrate the 44th birthday of its resident alligator snapping turtle, Tonca, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Tonca was rescued from a construction site in Mandarin in October 1994 and has lived at the museum since.

• In terms of criticisms, Mayor John Peyton and Sheriff John Rutherford have seen their share of volleys and backhands, but Friday they’ll be handling shots of a different kind. They’ll visit Camp Dynamite at the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation to play tennis with students.

• Speaking of Rutherford, he’s the speaker at Jacksonville Community Council Inc. Forward’s “Issues and Answers” program at noon July 29. Reservations are required. Contact Chandra at [email protected].

• Congratulations to the Florida Coastal School of Law for its Shadow Program. The American Bar Association recognized the mentoring initiative with a 2010 E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award, which honors projects that enhance professionalism among young lawyers. The ceremony will be Aug. 6 during the ABA’s annual meeting in San Francisco.
