City employees recognized for service

Every 13 weeks since he took office, Mayor John Peyton has hosted a ceremony at City Hall to recognize City employees who have marked milestones in service to the citizens of Jacksonville. Tuesday morning, the list included 15 people from seven departments with a combined 380 years of employment.

One of the employees receiving a 30-year service pin was Zerelda Lewis, an aide in the office of the Supervisor of Elections.

Lewis said she went to work for the City in the final days of former Mayor Hans Tanzler’s administration. Her first post was working for former General Counsel Dawson McQuaig, then Lewis transferred to the Clerk of the Courts office where she worked for S. Morgan Slaughter. She has worked in the elections office for 22 years.

“Zerelda is involved in everything that goes on in the office,” said Elections Supervisor Jerry Holland, who accompanied Lewis to the ceremony. “She works with registrations, petitions and candidates. She’s our longest-standing employee.”

Lewis said she “loves serving people.”

“It’s been a wonderful 30 years,” she said.
