'Christmas in June'

Jessie Ball duPont Fund President Sherry Magill; Maj. Jim Arrowood, area commander of the Salvation Army of North Florida; and Cheryl Riddick, vice president for grant-making at the Community Foundation in Jacksonville, were among those in attendance when the Community Safety Net Fund was re-opened at a news conference Thursday. The duPont Fund has invested $500,000, the Lucy Gooding Charitable Foundation Trust contributed $200,000 and other private investors have donated $110,000 for a total of $810,000 that will be used to sustain nonprofit organizations that provide food, shelter and emergency assistance. City Council President Richard Clark, President-elect Jack Webb and Adam Hollingsworth, mayor’s office chief of staff, pledged a City contribution of $100,000 to the fund. “It’s like Christmas in June,” said Ju’Coby Pittman-Peele, president and CEO of the Clara White Mission.
