The Justice Coalition named the recipients for the 2010 Ted Hires Legacy Awards, which will be given out during the second an-nual Ted Hires Legacy Dinner Oct. 21.
There are three categories for awards: the Ted Hires Legacy Outstanding Citizen Award, Ted Hires Legacy Outstanding Business Award and Ted Hires Legacy Outstanding Government Official Award.
In addition, five Northeast Florida sheriffs have named individuals in their counties to receive an award for outstanding community volunteer service.
The award recipients include:
• 2010 Ted Hires Legacy Outstanding Citizen Award winner: Isaac (Ike) E. Brown for his exceptional perseverance in dealing with his own victimization. Brown’s son was murdered in 2003 and he used the tragedy as an example of violent crime to mentor at-risk youth. Brown makes himself available 24 hours a day to the adolescents and works with a church prison ministry. Brown is a 25-year Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office veteran and now serves on the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.
• 2010 Ted Hires Legacy Outstanding Business Award winner: Lockwood P. Holmes, president and CEO of Poole Management Company. Holmes has been a contributor to the Justice Coalition and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations. Holmes frequently helps in funding of rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of criminals and contributes to the Justice Coalition to help serve the needs of victims.
• 2010 Ted Hires Legacy Outstanding Government Official Award winner: State Attorney Angela Corey for her service to victims of violent crime. Under Corey’s guidance, the State Attorney’s Office has doubled felony cases filed, juvenile felony cases and doubled the number of felony jury trials. In addition, conviction rates have risen from 72 percent to 88 percent.
• As selected by corresponding sheriffs, volunteer service award winners for outstanding community volunteer service include Deputy Jim Gill, selected by Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith; the Reinhold family, selected by Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler; Rev. Larry McGinley and Old Plank Road Baptist Church, selected by Duval County Sheriff John Rutherford; James “Jim” Dionne selected by Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves; and SJSCO Reserve Captain Steve Berman selected by St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar.
The Ted Hires Legacy Awards Dinner was established as a tribute to Justice Coalition founder Ted Hires. The annual event raises funds to carry on Hires’ legacy and continue assisting victims and their families in Northeast Florida.
Sponsorships for the event are available at four levels: platinum, gold, silver or bronze.
Individual tickets are available for $25.
Former Jacksonville Jaguar Tony Boselli will serve as master of ceremonies for the event, which will take place October 21 from 6–8:30 p.m. p.m. at the Morocco Shrine Center at at 3800 St. Johns Bluff Road.
