As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, the Daily Record has established this page that will each week chronicle the efforts of local nonprofit organizations. Bailey Publishing & Communications invites all members of the local nonprofit community to submit news, announcements, success stories and any other information they feel would be of interest to our readers. Email to: [email protected].

We also encourage our readers to become more aware of the needs of these worthy organizations as they try to continue to provide valuable services with reduced resources.

Promoting no-kill shelters
Maddie’s Fund, an organization dedicated to eliminating the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in the United States, has awarded a $40,000 grant to the Duval County Coalition, six local organizations striving to make Jacksonville a no-kill community.

The grant is designed to assist coalition members in evaluating the health and behavior of companion animals admitted to area animal welfare and rescue organizations.

“We are honored to be chosen as a recipient of the Maddie’s Fund Pet Evaluation Matrix Grant,” said Danya Parks-Freel, director of operations at the Jacksonville Humane Society, a member of the coalition.

“JHS has been a no-kill organization since 2005, and we are working closely with other organizations to end the euthanasia of healthy or treatable animals throughout Jacksonville.  The Maddie’s Fund grant will help us make Northeast Florida a no-kill community,” she said.
