Continuing legal education can be expensive and time-consuming, but pro bono attorneys can pick up the latest knowledge for free – that is, in support of the pro bono case they agree to accept.

When considering the duty of providing pro bono work as a privilege and honor of the legal profession, this turns out to be a great deal for pro bono attorneys. Webinar attendees receive CLE hours for each webinar, which can be accessed from a home or office computer.

Currently, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is providing free legal update education through the JALA Elder Law Series.

The next upcoming webinar is about changes in Florida power of attorney law effective Oct. 1. Attorney Robert Morgan is presenting the live webinar at noon Wednesday.

Morgan teaches that “there are new execution requirements, new ‘superpowers’ that must be included to get use and benefit and separate execution requirements for them as well, and there are portability problems for out-of-state powers of attorneys, in addition to new agent requirements for record-keeping.”

To register for this webinar, attorneys should visit this link: www3.gotomeeting.com/register/506295070.

The list of changes above is not exhaustive, but all of Morgan’s webinars are practical, informative and interesting. Morgan’s lectures are clear and concise as he explains the likely pitfalls and proper ways of dealing with changes in Florida law.

Morgan has written numerous articles and conducted seminars on real property, probate and estate-planning issues. This valuable pro bono support resource is a great opportunity for keeping up with the latest changes in Florida power of attorney law and many other areas of law.

Wednesday’s presentation on changes in Florida power of attorney law is one part of a four-part Elder Law Professional Training Series for pro bono attorneys.

Other topics include basic probate, guardianship and special needs trusts. All webinars are conducted live and are recorded for later viewing.

Attorneys are asked to accept a legal services pro bono case within a year of viewing the webinar and may attend all or one webinar in the series. Attorneys receive relevant reference information and document templates via email.

Educational networking is an important aspect of our professional growth and facilitates effective representation and the success of pro bono efforts.

When these resources are provided, it increases the likelihood that more local attorneys provide the best possible representation of clients who would not otherwise have access to legal advocacy.

The CLE webinars are developed and presented by pro bono attorneys for pro bono attorneys. Another support for pro bono attorneys is that JALA provides professional liability insurance when attorneys are representing JALA clients.

Anyone who is interested in a complete listing of the webinars should contact Kathy Para at [email protected].

As always, we thank past, current and future participants in pro bono efforts throughout Jacksonville and all of our communities in need.
