• Firehouse Subs CEO Don Fox will address “Franchise on Fire: The Firehouse Subs Success Story” at the Oct. 20 lunch meeting of the Association for Corporate Growth at Epping Forest Yacht Club. For information, call Donna Barker at 354-9600.

• Jacksonville Port Authority CEO Paul Anderson is keynote speaker today to the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville Global Business Luncheon at The River Club, co-hosted by The Gate Governors Club. His topic is “JaxPort’s Ties to the Economic Future of the First Coast Community.” Former state Sen. Tony Hill, federal government liaison for Mayor Alvin Brown, will give introductory remarks. Hill will assist Brown as he chairs the U.S. Conference of Mayors Metro Exports and Ports Task Force.

• Speaking of the mayor, he is scheduled as the featured speaker at Downtown Vision Inc.’s 11th annual meeting at 8 a.m. Nov. 3 at River City Brewing Co. Visit www.downtownjacksonville.org. The theme is “One Vision, One City, One Downtown.”

• Gov. Rick Scott appointed retired Navy Capt. Robert Buehn as the Compact Commissioner for the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Buehn, of Fleming Island, is a former chief of military affairs for the City of Jacksonville. He succeeds Spessard Boatright as commissioner and is appointed for a term that began Monday and ends when Scott decides. Buehn was among recent cuts at City Hall.

• Community Connections, formerly the YWCA, will celebrate its centennial anniversary with a gala dinner Oct. 20 at the Omni Downtown. The scheduled guest speaker for the event is Kevin Salwen, author of “The Power of Half.” Delores Barr and J. Wayne Weaver are the honorary chairman and chairwoman of the event.
