Sometimes at an Ask-A-Lawyer event, an attorney will decide to represent the person for whom he or she is providing help.

George Spencer offered to assist a person who came to seeking guidance on whether bankruptcy would be a good option.

Case acceptance is not a requirement, or even an expectation, of the attorneys who volunteer for these events, but what a fortunate occurrence it is for an attendee when that happens.

Spencer describes how he was able to help.

What were the basic facts of your case?

The case involved a client who, due to the downturn in the economy, had been out of work for several months. Unfortunately, she had incurred a considerable amount of consumer debt. It was very difficult for

her to move forward financially with bill collectors calling every day.

What were you able to accomplish for your client?

We were able to get all the debt discharged for my client. What this means is my client was no longer legally obligated to pay back the consumer debt, which included a substantial amount of penalties and interest. By obtaining a discharge, my client can now begin a fresh start toward financial stability.

Why was the outcome important to your client?

The outcome was important to my client because it would allow her the ability to begin a fresh start in securing employment and rebuilding her credit.

Why was the experience important to you? That is, what did you gain from the experience?

This experience was very rewarding and my client was extremely grateful. It was important to me to be able to help someone in a difficult situation. I gained a sense of satisfaction in knowing that I was able to make such a huge impact in a person’s life with such a small sacrifice on my part.

What is the name of your firm? In what areas do you practice?

The name of my firm is The Law Office of George A. Spencer, P.L. We practice in the areas of tax law, bankruptcy law, business law and personal injury (e.g. auto accidents).

What advice do you have for other attorneys considering pro bono involvement?

I strongly encourage all attorneys to participate in pro bono cases and get involved in the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid program. Any time we as professionals can give back by using our skills to serve those individuals going through difficult situations, it is truly a blessing for all involved.

Attorneys who are interested in learning more about the variety of pro bono opportunities available in the 4th Judicial Circuit are encouraged to contact Kathy Para, chair of The JBA Pro Bono Committee, at [email protected].
