Jacksonville International Airport remains open and operational as Hurricane Dorian approaches offshore, according to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry.
Curry said at a 6 p.m. briefing Tuesday the airport has activated its Emergency Operations Center.
Airport officials said via social media Tuesday that some flights have been canceled and they expect more through Wednesday.
Flight cancellations are determined by the airlines. JAX leaders recommend that passengers check with airlines for their flight status.
Curry said bridges will “likely close” Tuesday night.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office will determine when bridges are closed based on winds reaching a sustained 40 mph. Each closure is dependent on conditions at the location
Sheriff Mike Williams said earlier Tuesday that his office cannot provide lead time for drivers before ordering a bridge closure.
Williams added Tuesday night that the Florida Department of Transportation could be brought in to inspect bridges to determine safety before they reopen.
JSO officials said they will not reopen the bridges until Hurricane Dorian clears the Duval County area.
