Jacksonville Daily Record wins nine awards at Florida Media Conference

First-place finishes included Advertising Campaign and Overall Graphics Design.

The Jacksonville Daily Record won nine awards for editorial and advertising excellence at the annual Florida Media Conference in Orlando.

The awards, for the publication’s work in 2023, were presented July 25 and 26 at the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek hotel.

The winners:

In the 2024 Florida Advertising Media Executives Creative Excellence Awards:

• Advertising Coordinator Codi Gildberg won first place in Advertising Campaign for “Hunger Fight.”

Gildberg won third place for Multi-Media Campaign Digital for Jacksonville Business Professionals, “AI: The Promise and the Peril.”

In the 2024 Florida Press Association Weekly Newspaper Contest, the Daily Record won seven awards. The Daily Record competes in Division B, publications with print circulations of 4,000 to 15,000.

• Editor Monty Zickuhr won first place for Overall Graphic Design for all graphics including typography, use of photography, line art, effectiveness of presentation and page design.

• Former Associate Editor Government Affairs Mike Mendenhall won first place for State & Local Tax Reporting for “Deegan’s First Budget is a $1.75 billion plan.” Mendenhall is now associate editor at the Des Moines Business Record in Iowa.

• The Daily Record staff won second place for Website Excellence.

• Editor at Large Karen Brune Mathis, Mendenhall and Zickuhr won second place for Online Breaking News Coverage for the Gateway Jax development announcement.

• Contributing writer Mark Basch, Associate Editor Legal Affairs Max Marbut and Mathis won second place for Business Reporting for “The Path to Aldi,” about the sale of Winn-Dixie parent Southeastern Grocers to the German grocer.

• Daily Record Publisher Angie Campbell won second place for First Amendment Defense for “What is better for transparency: county website or newspapers?”

Zickuhr won third place for Front Page Makeup for covers including “Expanding by Air & Sea,” “We Made History,” and “A New Vision in New Springfield.”
